As Falcon and the Winter Soldier nears its end, we are introduced to a character who would make his debut in Black Widow last year, but who we see here for the first time: Countess Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus. In reality, John Walker has been stripped of Captain America’s cloak after doing something to one of the flag destroyers, and the Contessa (Italian for Countess) appears to be offering him support….. And maybe a new job. The character previously appeared in Nick’s Fury: Agent S.H.I.E.L.D., played by Lisa Rinna: Nick Fury’s old flame, she joins him against the resurrected HYDRA, reviving the old flame. Now let’s see who Contessa is in the comics, and try to incorporate the writers’ latest revisions into her story.

In the life of Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine, one of the greatest spies of her time, it is difficult to distinguish reality from lies. It’s usually dedicated to a three-pronged game of dupes in the world’s largest secret organizations. She was probably the only daughter of an Italian noble family, the heiress of an old noble family; her parents were part of the anti-communist movement in Italy and were murdered by Soviet spies. Alone and embittered, she was found by Dum-Dum Dugan, an American spy who saw potential in her and recruited her to SHIELD, the world’s largest spy agency. Apparently, it was all a ruse: Valentina (if that’s her real name) and her parents were already agents of Leviathan, the Soviet equivalent of S.H.I.E.L.D., and their recruitment by Dugan was part of a decade-long plan to infiltrate the organization….. A plan that worked perfectly. Contessa told Dugan that she was tired of the Italian time difference, that her life was meaningless after her parents were murdered, and that she wanted to take a more active and serious role in the world. An American agent bought her and decided to give her a chance to be accepted into the SHIELD training program: Valentina was first in class and passed all the tests with ease. When S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury came to check on the recruits’ progress, he was certainly impressed with her… But threw him to the ground with a judo move when he made a snide remark about female cops. Her talent did not go unnoticed, and immediately after her training, she was transferred to the Helicarrier, SHIELD’s mobile headquarters, where she served alongside Fury… and eventually became his mistress, a relationship that lasted for years.

Immersed in the world of spies, Valentina earned SHIELD’s trust by leading a major operation against Yellow Claw, the Chinese crime boss, while her relationship with Fury grew stronger and she moved in with him. When Fury made advances towards his ex Laura Brown, she pretended to be jealous again and began flirting with Captain America in retaliation… causing the two to break up and even fight. By the time she had cleared things up with Nick, everything seemed settled, but now she knew how much influence she had on the head of SHIELD and America’s greatest hero. Within S.H.I.E.L.D., she was appointed head of the Woman Force, which led to a strong rivalry with Sharon Carter (who was Cap’s girlfriend at the time), and she played a key role in the discovery of Deltes life lok model that took over the S. H.I.E.L.D.: She helped Fury defeat the Deltas and then supported his decision to disband S.H.I.E.L.D. after the incident by accompanying him across the world to destroy the base’s secrets and equipment. Soon after, Fury is unleashed and forced into hiding, and the agents loyal to him are driven from their command posts: Val was sent to Britain to become SHIELD’s new liaison, and she took the opportunity to deal a fatal blow to a rival organization, the RAID, by coordinating an international task force that included Britain’s Union Jack, Israel’s Sabra, and Saudi Knight. On behalf of her superiors on the Leviathan, she convinced Commodore Hunter and Alistair Stewart to draft and introduce a British version of the Superhuman Registration Act. Valentina had been working on her dangerous game for years without knowing any of the details: Nick Fury knew who she was really working for, and he had known for years …..

Contessa Valentina Allegra de la Fontaine is a highly intelligent and incredibly dangerous woman, a super spy who has worked for S.H.I.E.L.D., HYDRA and Leviathan, each time hiding her true intentions even from her superiors. She is a well-trained fighter, an experienced sniper with almost every firearm available, a charismatic leader and an excellent tactician who excels both on the field and on the team deck. Whether she’s vice president of SHIELD or the new Madame Hydra, Contessa is always one step ahead of her enemies and (temporary) allies. She answers only to the mysterious Orion, the leader of Leviathan’s At least, as long as their plans coincide.
