Treklanta is back, baby…and this year, it’s even better. The 3D film has been remastered to look better than ever, and they’ve even built an interactive version of the classic film where you can explore the set and watch how it was created. Don’t believe us? Just take a look at this video…
In July, when the iconic Star Trek franchise was rebooted with the release of Star Trek Into Darkness, Trek fans around the world rejoiced. The film went on to gross more than $467 million worldwide, and became the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2013. And while the film was a huge success, the world of Trek fandom had more to celebrate: the new film introduced a new Star Trek game, Titan Trek, which brings the franchise’s iconic characters to a new video game universe.
TrekLanta is an annual event that takes place in Georgia, USA that has been around since 2007. It’s a weekend-long event focused on the spirit of adventure, team building, camaraderie, and most of all fun. The theme for this year is VIRTUAL, and it’s a pretty cool way to experience TrekLanta. You’ll still get to see the sets, props, and characters from Trek, but you’ll be able to interact with them in a virtual world, and that’s pretty cool.. Every year, believe it or not, the Star Trek fan film community has its own conference… COVID shut down the whole planet in 2020, or at least it did till then!
TREKLANTA isn’t just a fan film convention, however. Since 2011, ERIC L. WATTS, Founder and Chairman of the Treklanta mini-con (originally known as TrekTrax), has welcomed a diverse group of guests, including a slew of veteran Star Trek and sci-fi actors, authors, and production people…along with a slew of other fine folks who fans have always enjoyed seeing and meeting.
Treklanta, on the other hand, is the event that Star Trek fan filmmakers call “home.” Treklanta has hosted the biennial BJO AWARDS—the only competition dedicated only to recognizing and rewarding Star Trek fan films—for the last half-decade. It’s the closest thing we have to the Academy Awards (although “Oscar” is now the lady who rescued Star Trek from cancellation in the 1960s with a massive letter-writing campaign!).
Unfortunately, because to the epidemic, Treklanta did not take place last year. Because this mini-con is usually financed using proceeds from the previous year’s event, there wasn’t enough money in the bank this year to fully fund an in-person Treklanta. Thankfully, fifteen months of quarantine has taught fans that the show CAN go on—and they don’t even have to leave their homes!
Welcome to TreklantaTM on the Holodeck, ladies and gentlemen!

Because judges are still being recruited, the Bjo Awards will not be given at this event. If you or someone you know has an established professional credit in the Star Trek franchise (actor, author, artist, writer, director, designer, producer, makeup artist, stunt double…pretty much anything) OR if you or someone you know is a Star Trek fan currently working in the television/motion picture industry and has no known association with any previous or current fan film, you and/or they are invited. For further information and a ballot, please email Eric Watts at [email protected]
It should also be noted that this event will seek contributions. The funds collected will be used to cover the costs of the next in-person Treklanta conference, which will take place in either 2022 or 2023. The next event has yet to be scheduled, but the success of this and other fundraisers will help decide when it can take place.
