The 5th. In March, Milan Records and Sony Music Masterworks released Pacific Rim: Black (music for the Netflix original animated series) by composer Brandon Campbell. The album, now available everywhere, features a score Campbell wrote for Legendary Television’s latest Netflix animated series, based on Legendary and Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim franchise.  Pacific Rim continues the story of epic battles between monsters and robots in an exciting new style: The Black premiered yesterday and is now available exclusively on Netflix.

Here’s what composer Brandon Campbell has to say about the soundtrack:

Our showrunner, Greg Johnson, wanted a score that contained elements of the DNA of the original Pacific Rim film, but was unique enough to support the struggles and triumphs of Taylor and Haley. We created a hybrid orchestral score with heavy themes and melodic elements that we hope will resonate with Pacific Rim fans, but also includes more intimate and emotional musical moments that follow our characters on their journey through The Black. I hope my music takes you to the world of Kaiju and the incredible power of the Jaegers, and to the hearts of Taylor and Haley.

I wanted to discover this soundtrack a month ago and I regret that life got in the way, because the music is for Pacific Rim: The black is good, very good. While I haven’t listened to the soundtracks of the Pacific Rim films (a terrible mistake, I know), there are moments scattered throughout the soundtrack that sound so good that they could only have come from and/or been inspired by the films’ original soundtracks. That’s a good thing, because thematic continuity between movies and TV series is a proven way to keep viewers invested in a new story. Let’s put it this way: When the story seems to come from the same universe, it’s easier to accept that it belongs to that universe, even if none of the usual characters from the movie appear.

Which I find very interesting, aside from the musical connection to other Kaiju films I would swear to hear. For example, Kaiju Messiah has a musical sequence that sounds suspiciously like the music from Godzilla (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2021), when Godzilla is in action. I don’t know if this is intentional or not, but it would make sense since the story of Pacific Rim is about fighting Kaiju (which Godzilla is too, albeit in a different story).

Another thing I really like about the music in Pacific Rim: Black is as descriptive as possible. That is to say, out of the desolation and danger of this environment a striking image emerges. There’s nothing in this music that you know belongs to science fiction just because you hear it. It would have been so easy for Netflix to just have acceptable music, but they didn’t, they have music that carries its part of the story and that’s so important. Do you need music to put the final nail in the coffin of where the story takes place, what this world looks like? Bad music, as I’ve said so many times, can ruin a good story, and by all accounts, this is the best music for Pacific Rim: Black.
