Ah, the soundtrack! That time-honored piece of music that accompanies the film, both in the theater and on posters and on the various physical products that can be bought from the moviegoing experience. It’s a staple of the experience, and a crucial component that can make or break a movie. Here at freewheelingfilm, we cover all things related to the soundtrack, from the latest albums to the greatest soundtracks of all time.

In the world of film, the opening scene of a movie is often the most memorable. So when music and sound design company Mutemath created the soundtrack for the movie “The Green Knight”, they wanted to create an epic and memorable track. They did just that with “One Year Hence”.

Milan Records announces for the 30th. July the release of THE GREEN KNIGHT (ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK) with music by composer and performer Daniel Hart. The album can be pre-ordered now. The album features the music Hart wrote for director David Lowry’s latest adventure film, based on the classic Arthurian tale Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The resulting collection of 29 tracks is as epic and unique as the film itself, an impressive, dramatic and expansive body of music that hovers between medieval and modern.

First single One Year Hence, released with the pre-order of the album, is a dark premonition, underlined by heavy, haunting synths and punctuated by stern shots and bursts of dissonant chorus – listen here. The soundtrack is the latest in a long creative collaboration between Lowry and Hart. The duo previously worked together on Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, Pete’s Dragon, A Ghost Story and The Old Man & the Gun. The Green Knight, starring Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, comes out on Friday the 30th. July, in cinemas at A24.

An epic fantasy adventure based on the timeless Arthurian legend, The Green Knight tells the story of Sir Gawain (Dev Patel), the brash and headstrong nephew of King Arthur, who goes on a daring quest to find the Green Knight, a giant, emerald, humanoid alien. Gawain battles ghosts, giants, thieves and schemers on his profound journey to define his character and prove his worth to his family and his kingdom by taking on his greatest rival. Visionary director David Lowry offers a fresh and bold interpretation of the classic tale of the Knights of the Round Table.

Composer Daniel Hart talks about the soundtrack:

Making this music was like running from a pack of hyenas while wading through a river of chocolate mud. David [Lowry] and I have never taken so long to find what we were looking for musically in one of his films. So it’s all the more satisfying now to hear and appreciate what we did, especially when I consider how many late nights and hair-pulling it took. Like Gawain, I spent most of my time wandering the wilderness, finding little moments of happiness here and there, often thanks to persistent dumb luck. I hope that when you hear the soundtrack, you don’t just think of me sitting in my studio endlessly brooding. But if that is the case, your point is very well taken.
