The online entertainment platform Viddsee is holding a conference from 27 to 29 November. In September, for the third time, the Juree Awards will be presented in the Philippines to celebrate and support filmmakers and the Asian film community. The Viddsee Juree Awards (Juri) is an annual industry award recognizing the best short films in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

Babirut Villarama

The award-winning director, Mrs. Babyut Villarama, first saw the beauty and dangers of the documentary film through her work as a researcher and producer on a television show called Pipol. The task of filling in the stories of real people, real situations with brevity has led her to create and direct some of the best documentaries the Philippines have to offer – from Sunday Beauty Queen, a documentary about the lives of Filipino workers in Hong Kong who rebuild their lives by taking part in beauty contests on their special weekends; Little Azkalam is a documentary about the journey of twenty-two (22) boys selected by the Philippine Football Association to prepare for the coveted U-17 World Cup in 2019 and the 2024 Olympics.

His films encourage viewers to become agents of social change and to see not only the beauty of Filipino friendship in the world, but also the limits of trade and illegal working conditions. Anderson Le, picture courtesy of Frolick Hawaii.

Anderson The

Based in Los Angeles, Anderson Le has worked intensively as artistic director of the 39-year-old HIFF (Hawaii International Film Festival) to promote independent and world cinema. In addition to his work at the HIFF, Le is also a programmer for the Los Angeles Asia-Pacific Film Festival, where he presents the latest works of Asian American and international cinema to audiences in Southern California, and a programming consultant for the Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy, where he is responsible for the annual parallel programming of documentary films.

He joined the Singapore International Film Festival in 2017 as programme advisor. He is also a program consultant for Comcast and works on the monthly content of Xfinity on Demand with an emphasis on Asian and Asian-American content. Le has also produced several Vietnamese feature films, including SAIGON ELECTRIC (2011), HOLLOW (2014) and BITCOIN HEIST (2016). He is co-founder of EAST Films, which has offices in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and Los Angeles, USA, to create original content in Southeast Asia. Happy Kuswandi

Lucky Kuswandi is one of the most interesting young directors in Indonesia. His films have been shown at international festivals all over the world and have received high prices, awards and distribution. The Wall Street Journal praises his work as original and unexplored. In 2008 he directed the short documentary film MISS OR MRS? which was presented at the renowned Berlin 2009 film festival.

In 2010 he made his first feature film MADAME X, which won the Best Film at the LGBT film festival in Copenhagen. His latest films SELAMAT PAGI MALAM / IN THE ABSENCE OF THE SUN (2014) received the Best Director Award from the Indonesian Directors’ Club, while his short film THE FOX EXPLOITS THE TIGER’S MIGHT was presented in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in the Critics’ Week section. In 2017 Lucky released his third feature film, GALIH & RATNA, a remake of the famous Indonesian film GITA CINTA DARI SMA.

Lucky also works as a film teacher at Nusantar Multimedia University and teaches film making. Currently working as creative director for a production company / new online film platform SLATE INDONESIA.

Discussion on the growth of the Asian film industry

The three judges will discuss the development of Asian cinema, led by producer Alemberg Ang on the 27th and Petersen Vargas and Michael Red on the 29th. October, who will talk about personal branding as a cameraman.
