Paralympian Becca Meyers who won gold at the Rio Olympics 2016 has quit the Tokyo games after being denied the use of a personal carer. She was told to rely on an adapted version of the wheel chair. She couldn’t even wear her medal for the opening ceremony due to having no access to a cane.

One of Japan’s most famous Paralympians, Becca Meyers, has decided not to compete in the upcoming Winter Paralympics in Tokyo because she has been refused access to a carer and has been effectively exiled by the International Paralympic Committee. In the run up to the event, the US Paralympian, who won bronze at the Rio Paralympics in 2016, had been allowed to practice on the sidelines with a personal coach, but when she went to Tokyo five months ago to train she was told the Paralympic Committee would no longer allow her to train with her coach.

Paralympic hopeful Becca Myers recently announced on Twitter that she will be withdrawing from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) ruled that the Australian athlete would not be granted a personal carer. The IPC said that the Paralympic Committee had not been able to make contact with Ms. Myers’ coach in time to make the decision, but that they were aware of her circumstances and that the decision was made in the best interest of the athlete.

Paralympian-Becca-Meyers-Quits-Tokyo-Olympics-After-Being-Denied-Personal

Becca Meyers, a deaf and blind paralympian swimmer, has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics after being refused a personal caregiver owing to COVID limitations.

Meyers, a six-time Paralympic champion, explained her decision to withdraw on Twitter in a “gut-wrenching” message.

I’m heartbroken to announce that I’ll be withdrawing from the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Because of my handicap, the USOPC has repeatedly rejected my reasonable and necessary accommodation, leaving me with little option. The following is the full statement: pic.twitter.com/p9tKsbPip2

Meyers claims that the USOPC (United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee) rejected her request for a Personal Care Assistant (PCA), who she claims is her mother, Maria Meyers, since she and 33 other competitors already had a PCA.

When Myers’ family sought explanation from the authorities, there were disagreements over who was to blame for the decision. Mark Meyers, Becca Meyers’ father, told The Washington Post, “We called the Maryland secretary of state.” We contacted the Japanese government and the ambassador, and they all said it wasn’t the government or the organizing group. The USOPC is the one who is preventing this.”

He then made startling claims about the USOPC’s incompetence and disdain for his daughter. “They have the option of requesting additional [official credentials]… They just did not account for her. They were aware of the [problem] in February. ‘We’re sorry, but we can’t assist you,’ they said. If they had asked the appropriate individuals, they could have fixed it in time. They’ve made the decision not to.”

The COVID-19 mask requirements in Tokyo, which are compulsory throughout the competition, are another serious problem for Paralympians with vision impairments. When a person’s face is hidden by a mask, how is a visually impaired person expected to interact with a person or caregiver using lip-reading skills?

“I’d want to wrap something over their eyes and put something in their ears and drop them in the middle of the Village and say: ‘Okay, now get yourself to the pool,’” Maria Meyers told The Washington Post of the authorities who refused her daughter entry. “Best of luck.”

Senator Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire recently produced a video discussing the injustices Meyers and other athletes are presently experiencing.

Becca Meyers is a six-time Paralympic medalist, but she is forced to withdraw from this year’s games because to hazardous inequalities.

“She (Meyers) and other Team USA athletes with disabilities are allegedly being refused sufficient access to personal care support owing to COVID-19 restrictions,” Hassan adds.

Meyers having to withdraw from the games because he was “denied a fair and necessary accommodation” is a “outrage,” Hassan adds, “and an avoidable scenario that should never have reached to this stage.”

Meyers concluded her speech with a message of hope and optimism for future handicapped athletes, stating, “I’m speaking out for future generations of Paralympic competitors in the hopes that they never have to go through the agony that I’ve gone through.” “I’ve had enough.”

Paralympian Becca Meyers is breaking records with her Olympic Games. She’s a double amputee competing at the Rio Olympics. She’s also one of the few people to have her own personal carer, an 18 year old girl named Phoebe who is the youngest personal carer to be employed at the Rio Paralympics..
