Abstract

Kino Lorber’s highly anticipated North Shore Blu-ray edition is presented in what I consider a special package, with a new audio commentary by Phelps and Kleiser, plus on-camera interviews (done during COVID, so it’s a zoom interview), deleted scenes, an alternate ending and a trailer. The series is an update to the previous Universal DVD edition, so it’s every fan’s dream come true. It will be from the 13th. April will be available.

Plot:

Rick Kane (Matt Adler, Teen Wolf) is a teenage surfing champion from Arizona who dreams of conquering the legendary waves of Oahu’s North Shore.

Revision:

Rick Kane (Matt Adler of White Water Summer), a teenager from Arizona, dreams of surfing big waves in Hawaii – more specifically, on the North Shore – and hopefully living off the sponsors. After high school, he gets on a plane with $500 and dives into the depths of reality: It’s too much for him. Not only is he an amateur surfer compared to the usual locals, but after a break-in that left him penniless and without a place to spend the night. But he was lucky: He meets a dumb surfboard grinder named Turtle (John Philbin), who introduces him to his boss, a local legend named Chandler (Gregory Harrison) who makes surfboards for all the famous surfers. Chandler immediately became attached to Rick and not only let him stay with his family for a few months, but also taught him how to surf. Rick soaks up the atmosphere of the guru and becomes a key figure on the island. He gets into trouble with some locals and finds time to start an affair with a pretty local girl named Kiani (Nia Peeples) that soon becomes complicated. When the big sponsored contest comes around, Rick decides to take the plunge and to everyone’s surprise, he becomes a real contestant.

North Shore is a coming-of-age drama with surf footage and an authentic Hawaiian vibe that was a come and go in cinemas but has found new life on home video and cable. Adler alone plays the lead role, and he’s surrounded by true surfing legends, including Jerry Lopez, who shines as an antagonist and then again as an ally, and Laird Hamilton, who almost played He-Man in the Lord of the Universe sequel. Fun in every sense of the word. Surfing won’t be so cool until Blue Crush gets here. By Randall Kleiser and William Phelps.
