Kid Cosmic, set in New Mexico, follows the main character Kid Cosmic, a 9-year-old kid who lives for his dream of becoming a superhero. His wish comes true when he finds 5 Cosmic Power Stones and distributes them to himself and his friends to form Team Kid Cosmic and Local Heroes:
-Kid Cosmic: The Green Stone of Flight (and anything else that is a spoiler of the plot)
Purple gate creation stone.
-Father G (the child’s grandfather): Yellow multiplication stone (you can clone yourself infinitely).
-Pink: A blue rock of gigantic proportions (4 years old and 40 feet high in the photo).
-Tuna sandwich (cat): Blue stone of foresight (allows one to see the future).
Kid Cosmic, Jo, Papa G, Rosa and Tuna Sandwich are the exact opposite of what a team of superheroes should look like, but that also makes them so cute because they are strangers and many people (like me) can identify with them. Joe is my favorite outside of the band because he can totally relate to me being young and wanting to travel to fascinating places all over the world.
Don’t be fooled by the series’ cartoon format, the ten episodes that make up a season of Kid Cosmic are some of the best superhero content I’ve seen in nearly 12 months of pandemic boredom (I miss the movie theaters). It all starts with a typical cute format, but quickly becomes super serious, especially when you realize that Kid Cosmic, despite all his bravado, doesn’t know what to do with his superpowers now that he has them. The entire series could be described as a lesson on what it really means to be a superhero, which has little to do with the way he is described in the comics.
That doesn’t mean the series completely destroys all superhero clichés. Without going into too much detail, there is at least one predictable twist in the middle of the season (predictable, but entertaining), and one twist that you are guaranteed not to see until it actually happens.
Another thing I like about Kid Cosmic? All the Easter eggs reference different moments in the comic book or superheroes. Aside from the obvious reference to the stones of infinity, my favorite? An honest parody of Power Rangers, right down to the hilarious jokes and moves. I won’t say where this Power Rangers scream takes place, but if you’ve seen a Power Rangers season, you know when it takes place, and it’s hysterical.
I’m a little disappointed with the way season 1 ends, if only because I’m dying to see what happens next, and we don’t know when season 2 will come out. The good news, however, is that season 2 of Kid Cosmic is coming at some point. Until then, I think I need to watch this season a few more times, it’s that good. I laughed, I felt like crying, I apologized because I doubted I would enjoy this show.
I know 2021 is still very young, but Kid Cosmic is easily one of the best movies on Netflix this year. Try it if you can, you won’t regret it!
