According to Derek, it wasn’t his decision.

John Wick has become an icon of the franchise, not only because of the action choreography, but also because of the subtle behind-the-scenes world building that has been going on since the first film. That’s largely thanks to screenwriter Derek Kolstad, who was at the forefront of the franchise and involved in all three John Wick films. It seems that this collaboration has come to an end, as Derek will no longer be involved with John Wick 4 and John Wick 5.

Asked about the progress of these two sequels, Derek basically denied his involvement in them:

Actually, I’m not doing 4 and 5. At some point, the studio tells you that your creation is ready and you wish them luck. I’m still close with Chad, I’m still close with Dave, and I don’t know what’s going to happen, but I’m happy to see him.

When asked further, Derek explained that it was not his decision, but he refrained from saying anything bad about what had happened between him and Lionsgate. He alluded to sharing the writing with John Wick: Chapter 3 is Parabellum with multiple writers, so it looks like Lionsgate has enough to continue the series without him.

No, it wasn’t my decision. If you think about the [contracts] of these things, the third one I shared with some people, they weren’t supposed to come back to me, and they didn’t. And so you look at it and maybe you’re hurt and I would be – let’s say if I were 20 years ago – I would be, but when I see how the industry is and how things are going, I just think you put a stop to it and hope for the best and the players go do other things elsewhere. And yes, this is personal, so I will never say anything about John Wick. I want this thing to survive and thrive.

It’s a particularly unfortunate decision for John Wick fans, who have often praised the script, as the world-building is as essential to the franchise as the action. It seems the franchise has gotten too big and Lionsgate probably thinks it doesn’t need Derek anymore.

Talk about fat people: John Wick has been expanded upon in many ways. The Ballerina spin-off tournament is already in the planning stages, as is the Continental TV show that is in the works. According to Derek, we can expect some big announcements in the coming weeks as the franchise gets ready to spread its wings. He also talked about what Continental could bring to Vic’s world.

They’re going to make some big announcements in the next few weeks about what’s going to happen there. The series] is about the depth of the world, and not just about killers, but about everything that comes with it. And a lot of the origin stories are some of the characters you see in [John Wick].

John Wick 4 is scheduled for release on the 27th. May 2022 scheduled. The release date for John Wick 5 has not yet been set, but the film will be shot for the fourth time. Director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves should be back.
