There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams’s recent behavior. The 41-year-old actor recently made a series of controversial comments regarding police brutality on NPR’s “Code Switch” segment, causing the producers of the hit television program to give him a warning.

A few weeks ago, news broke that Grey’s Anatomy would be losing a series regular for the show’s upcoming 17th season. Now, it appears there’s at least a small chance that the report was incorrect, and that the exiting actor could be sticking around for the “long haul.” The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that Jesse Williams, who plays Dr. Jackson Avery on Grey’s, is negotiating a new contract with ABC that will keep him on the long-running medical drama for at least one more season.

Another Grey’s Anatomy doctor is leaving the medical hit series after season 17. Actor Jesse Williams, who played Dr. Jackson Avery for 12 seasons, is leaving the series, it was announced Thursday 6. May, in an episode called Look Up Child made herself known. The final episode, titled Tradition, will air on the 20th. May has been released.

Jesse Williams is an exceptional artist and activist. Watching him evolve over the past 11 years, both on and off screen, was a real treat. Jesse brings so much heart, care and intelligence to his work. Jesse will be sorely missed, as will Jackson Avery, whom he played flawlessly for so many years, series director Krista Vernoff told Entertainment Tonight in a statement.

Japril’s latest reunion show became popular around the world before it even aired. Former series regular Sarah Drew returned to the show as Dr. April Kepner to say goodbye to Dr. Jackson.

Vernoff’s showrunners and the show’s writers had to make sure the finale to Jackson’s story satisfied fans. Nothing like giving one of the series’ most beloved couples, Dr. Kepner and Dr. Jackson, a fitting ending.

To give Dr. Jackson a satisfying farewell, the show paid attention to his character in the episode Look Up Child: He visits his father Robert (Eric Roberts), reunites with his ex and the love of his life April (Drew), and visits with his mother, Dr. Katherine Fox (played by Debbie Allen).

His impending departure came to light in conversations with Robert and April, when he informed them that he had decided to establish a family foundation to work specifically to bring real racial justice to medicine, something he had failed to do while working in health care. This decision forces her to move to Boston, which also forces April to live behind Jackson with her partner Matthew (Justin Bruening), who currently lives in Seattle, so he can continue to care for April’s child and her share, Harriet.

I’m not running from something, I’m trying to run to something, I’m trying to make something my own, Jackson said. April made another shocking revelation that she and Matthew have broken up, giving fans reason to get excited for a possible return of the couple.
