In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been a number of romantic relationships between superheroes. Hawkeye and Black Widow are two that have seemed to go on their own journey from enemies, to friends with benefits, to something more along the lines of a relationship. Did they date?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hawkeye and Black Widow have been best friends. They’ve even dated before in the comics. But when did they date?

Hawkeye and Black Widow have one of the most powerful romantic relationships in the Marvel Universe. Both in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and in the Marvel Comics, their love for each other is palpable. As a result, many fans speculate whether Hawkeye and Black Widow had a relationship.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hawkeye and Black Widow never dated. Their affection for one other is intense, yet it is totally platonic. In the comics, on the other hand, it blossomed into something greater, and they did ultimately date before parting up.

Some fans feel their relationship wasn’t platonic at all, but rather that they knew they’d never be able to be together due to their occupations and personalities. To obtain a better response, let’s look at their connection in both the MCU and the comics.

Hawkeye and Black Widow’s Relationship in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

Clint Barton, or Hawkeye, and Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, are members of the Avengers, the world’s most powerful superhero team. You can see right away that the two have known one other for a long time and are quite fond of each other.

Many people believe that their relationship is romantic, or that they want it to be romantic, but this isn’t the case, at least not in the MCU, as various signs show.

First, in the first Avengers film, when Nat is attempting to persuade Loki to disclose his true motives, they discuss Hawkeye and her connection. When she responds, “Love is for children,” Loki implies that she is in love. “I owe him money.”

We find out later what debt she was referring about. Hawkeye was assigned to murder her when she was still a Widow under Dreykov’s control. However, he saw that all of her misdeeds were not really hers, so he saved her life and freed her from Dreykov’s grip. He saved her life, and she went on to join the Avengers as a result.

They’ve fought innumerable battles together, and their camaraderie is unlike any other we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Clint was the closest thing Natasha had to a family before the Avengers, and although they love each other a much, it’s not a romantic affection.

This is reinforced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, as Barton leads the whole team to his family home to hide. Nobody knew he had a wife and children, except Natasha, who not only knew but was very close to them all, particularly the youngsters who called her Auntie Nat.

If Barton’s wife ever realized that Clint’s connection with her was anything other than a bond so strong that it had become like family, I doubt she would like her presence. They’d name a kid after Nat, for example.

The last reason why people think Natasha secretly loved Hawkeye despite the fact that they never went beyond their friendship and turned it into a relationship. They think that’s why she sacrificed herself on Vormir instead of Clint to retrieve the Mind Stone, but that’s not the case.

First and foremost, none of them wanted to see the other die, so they agreed to sacrifice themselves in his or her place. They physically had a battle in which the winner gets to die, and although it was a touching scene in the film, it was far from romantic.

“Love is for children,” Natasha once remarked to Loki. “I owe him money.” She paid up her obligation to Vormir by sacrificing her life to rescue Barton, who had more to live for (wife & children). It was Nat who was returning her obligation, not Clint, who she secretly adored.

As a result, Hawkeye and Black Widow are the closest friends who have become family in the MCU, and they have a profound fondness for one another. However, the friendship is strictly platonic and never develops into a love one.

Hawkeye and Black Widow’s Comic Book Relationship

Things are a little different in the comics. Hawkeye saves Natasha’s life, transforms her to the good side, and they battle together as SHIELD’s agents to change the Avengers. However, unlike the MCU, their relationship did became sexual and personal at one time.

Clint had feelings for Natasha in the comics, and she had feelings for him as well, but the romance was short-lived for a variety of reasons. They had radically different personalities, and they understood at some time that their connection may do a lot of harm to a lot of people, including themselves.

He wanted nothing more than to settle down with a wife, kids, a huge farmhouse, and a regular, tranquil life once he retired from being one of the Earth’s mightiest heroes, as Ultron had told Barton.

Natasha would never be able to offer him that since she was born to fight. She doesn’t desire the same life as him, and their relationship will eventually split down.

They eventually broke up for good, but they remained really close friends, and we were always there for each other when they needed it the most. It’s been suggested that they still had romantic emotions for one other, but that they never acted on them because they realized that being friends is better for everyone.

So, although Hawkeye and Black Widow did have a love connection in the comics, it was short-lived and they returned to being best friends.

It’s unclear if they still have romantic emotions for one other, but one thing is certain: they adore each other and would go to great lengths for each other. It doesn’t matter whether it’s romantic or platonic.

In the MCU, Black Widow has been dating Hawkeye. In comics, she is currently dating Spider-Man. Reference: who does black widow love.
