Did you know that Agatha Christie was a TV series star in the 1970’s and ’80s? This is one of the many Agatha Christie detective series that ran between the ’60s and ’90s, starring British actress Ashley Jensen (The Good Life, Downton Abbey). The Agatha Christie series follows the adventures of retired Miss Marple, who returns to the village of St. Mary Mead to help solve crimes.

Agatha Raisin is an elderly amateur sleuth who lives in the fictional village of St.bridge in Yorkshire, England, with her husband Frank Raisin—a retired police officer—and her daughter-in-law, Rosemary. One of her best-known adventures is solving the mysterious disappearance of her neighbor’s dog, Snowy.

After the success of her debut novel, Agatha Raisin & the Quiche of Death, the Queen of crime returns in her first Agatha Raisin TV series – and she’s got a few tricks up her sleeve. (But she doesn’t want to tell anyone.) When the series arrives on television, she’ll be played by Ashley Jensen (Doctor Who, Sherlock), a regular in the British TV series Casualty.

Do you like crime novels? You know the genre, following the same amateur detective from story to story in small towns teeming with crime, full of eccentric residents and newcomers. This genre is incredibly popular in books and could very well translate to the small screen.

Agatha Raisin is based on a series of novels (currently 32) by author M.K. Beaton, and the TV series is, in a word, delightful. Ashley Jensen (from Extra and After Life) plays the role of Agatha. Agatha is a former public relations director living out her dream retirement in the small village of Carsley.

It’s hard to be an outsider in this quiet little town, and Agatha fits right in. She struggles to fit in, but she can’t help but stand out. As she tries to integrate into village life, she stumbles upon one mystery after another and uses her public relations skills to solve sensitive crimes. She quickly gained a reputation as a detective.

The series begins at this point, introducing the company of Agatha’s eccentric companions. There’s Roy Silver (Matthew Horne), Agatha’s former assistant, who has connections in town and plenty of time on his hands. We have Gemma (Katie Weeks), who technically cleans Agatha’s house, but also helps her solve mysteries. And then there’s James (Jamie Glover), who lives next door and adds a touch of romance.

Also on hand are Sarah Bloxby (Lucy Leemann), the wife of the town’s pastor, and Constable Bill Wong (Matt McQuey), a local detective who can’t resist Agatha’s powerful powers.

The first season of the Agatha Raisin series consists of hour-long episodes, each based on one of Beaton’s novels. Later seasons contained 90-minute episodes. We see how Agatha slowly adjusts to her new life as she unravels the mysteries. She looks like a very, very bright Jessica Fletcher from Murder She Wrote. And much younger too – she would be very offended if I didn’t point that out to her.

The tone of the series is very light, despite being full of murder. Agatha Raisin is undoubtedly a dramatic series that showcases the considerable comedic talents of Ashley Jensen. The puzzles are completely episodic and rarely switch from one series to another. The rest of the series revolves around Agatha’s personal life.

Ashley Jensen, as mentioned, is great as Agatha Raisin. She is confident and loud, independent and courageous. She dresses the way she wants and although she wants to fit in, she doesn’t compromise to do so. Her costume designers convey her bold personality in every dazzling print and fluorescent shirt she wears.

The rest of the cast is, how could it be otherwise, rather boring. Their color palette is much more muted, and they are a collective voice of reason. Well, in general. Only Roy is as open-minded as Agatha, but even he pales in comparison. The actors all play solid and funny, embodying the conventions of a cozy mystery and Agatha, who is larger than life.

The village of Carsley is in the Cotswolds and we get a glimpse of an idealised version of life in the English countryside. Everything is very chic and traditional, and the landscapes are beautiful. The only thing I would caution you about is taking your time. It’s best to watch Agatha one episode at a time, so her charming quirks don’t get boring.

I really like Agatha Raisin. I love the setting, the characters and the peculiar strangeness of each episode. If you’ve ever enjoyed a mystery series, try Agatha Raisin. Even if you haven’t done it yet, try it. It’s fun, easy and engaging. There are currently three seasons of the Agatha Raisin series, with a fourth coming soon.

The show originally aired on Sky 1 in the UK and moved to Acorn TV after its first season. This is the only place it’s available for streaming (you can get Acorn in addition to Amazon Prime), I watched it on disc through my Netflix DVD subscription.
